US JUNIOR INTERNATIONAL GRASS COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS

Philadelphia Cricket Club A longstanding tradition of tennis at its best!

The Philadelphia Cricket Club, founded in 1854, played its earliest cricket matches in Camden, New Jersey; at the Chestnut Hill Cricket Club (which it later absorbed); and Germantown Cricket Club. Tennis came to PCC after it established its permanent home in 1883.

In that year, multimillionaire Henry Howard Houston, a director of the Pennsylvania Railroad, donated seven acres at 415 West Willow Grove Avenue where the present facilities are located.  The Philadelphia Cricket Club has prospered as one of the nation’s premier grass court tennis venues since that time.  Men’s and women’s US National Championships were played at PCC from 1886 until 1892.  From the time mixed doubles became a national championship in 1892 until 1921 when the tournament was moved to Forest Hills, the US National Mixed Doubles championships were played at the Club. The Junior International Grass Courts Championships has called Philadelphia Cricket Club home since 1918.

2004 sees PCC as host of the U.S. Junior International Grass Courts Championships and the USTA National Men’s 70’s Grass Courts Championships. Looking to 2004, in celebration of the club’s sesquicentennial, PCC will host the ITF Group B World Championships.
